Why Do We Even Experience Neck Pain?

A healthy neck is essential for a healthy lifestyle. Your neck consists of vertebrae that descend from the skull to the upper torso. Cervical discs in your neck serve to absorb shock between these vertebrae. If the bones, ligaments, or muscles in your neck experience an injury, inflammation, or are impacted by a disease, you may experience neck pain or stiffness. While many cases of neck pain are resolved naturally within a few days, serious cases of neck pain may require treatment from an experienced chiropractor.

What Causes Neck Pain?

Identifying the source of your neck pain can be challenging because there are so many different causes for this type of pain or stiffness. Your chiropractor can help you identify the cause of your neck pain, and from there, formulate a personalized treatment plan that will meet your needs and provide relief from pain.

Muscle Tension and Strains

Strain and continual tension on the muscles and ligaments in your neck can lead to neck pain. Poor posture, sleeping in an awkward position at night, or straining your neck during exercise can all cause neck pain.

Head or Neck Injuries

Serious injuries to the head or neck, such as from a car accident or sports-related injury, can cause chronic neck pain.

Heart Attacks

Neck pain can be a symptom of a heart attack; however, this will also be associated with other symptoms, such as sweating, shortness of breath, arm pain, and nausea.

Meningitis

This inflammation of the tissue around the spinal cord and brain can cause neck pain, in addition to a fever and headaches. Meningitis is a serious medical condition that can prove fatal. If you’re experiencing these symptoms, seek medical attention immediately.

Types of Neck Pain

Not all neck pain is the same. In fact, doctors have classified four different types of neck pain: axial neck pain, radicular neck pain, referred pain, and myelopathic pain.

1. Axial neck pain

The most common type of neck pain, axial neck pain generally feels dull or like an aching sensation. Also known as mechanical pain, axial neck pain is usually caused by muscle strains or ligament sprains.

2. Radicular neck pain

This type of pain occurs when a nerve root in the cervical spine becomes inflamed due a herniated disc, bone spurs, or other types of spinal degeneration. This nerve pain is often intense and can feel like an electrical shock. Radicular neck pain may also radiate down to the shoulder, arm, and hand.

3. Referred pain

When pain is felt in a location different from the actual source of the pain, this is known as referred pain, which is usually experienced as deep, throbbing, or cramping sensation. Generally, referred pain is only felt on one side of the body, but can be felt on both sides. For neck pain, this type of pain usually comes from headaches, migraines, or shoulder pain.

4. Myelopathic pain

This type of pain occurs when the spinal cord in the neck becomes compressed. In addition to pain in the neck, myelopathic pain can also be felt all the way down to the legs or feet.
